THE BAT FLOWER

Yesterday, I come across this weird flower just by chance while searching for any site from where to purchase adenium seeds. And I got to know that this bat-like looking flower has an official name of Tacca Chantrieri and it is an orchid!

{...Tacca Chantrieri grows wild in the tropical forest in Yunnan Province, China, where it can get as tall as 36 inches (~0.91 meters). There are different color types, including white and brown, both retaining the whiskers of the black variety...}

I immediately wanted to get such a beauty but was a bit scared away by instructions for care. Thus it's said to be verrry capricious: nor dry air, nor extreme low\high temperatures and drafts, and it loves well-drained soil and high humidity!
But also they say if one successfully grows orchids ( never tried), he/she isn't likely to have problems with the Bat flower as well. Should I risk..? ;)

You might like a book called "The Orchid Thief" published by Random House. Author: Susan Orleans Here is a link to the first chapter - although there are many chapters devoted to the care of orchids and she is a truly magnificent writer. http://www.randomhouse.com/catalog/display.pperl?isbn=9780449003718&view=excerpt An intelligent film was made - based (creatively) upon the book - starring Meryl STreep - called "Adaptation" http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=0HtZ2M4e_AM
